Eugene Owen Kern ’36 of Tenafly, New Jersey, died on July 6. Coming from Leonia (New Jersey) High School, Eugene majored in English and was a member of Delta Upsilon and the Dartmouth Players at Dartmouth. During the five years after graduation he was a freelance actor, director, writer and news correspondent in New York City, Philadelphia and Hollywood. In 1941 he entered government service with Voice of America, transferring to Hollywood in 1943 with the U.S. Office of War Information, where he was in charge of the motion picture division of the Los Angeles overseas bureau. In 1946 he returned to Voice of America, where among various staff assignments he provided live coverage of the United Nation’s first year. He became director of the New York Program Center and later of the overseas bureau responsible for news coverage in west and east Europe. After retirement from Voice of America in 1974, he continued writing and working in radio and television until 1980. In 1942 Gene married Rosemary Messner, who predeceased him. He is survived by their children Robin, Christopher ’69, Jonathan ’75 and Eugene.
